Environmental Noise and Management

Overview from Past to Present

About this book

Environmental Noise and Management

Selma Kurra, Istanbul Technical University andĀ  dBKES Engineering Ltd, Turkey

Ā

A comprehensive overview of environmental noise pollution from the standpoint of environmental impact and control

Ā

Ā

Environmental noise is studied, regulated and monitored by many governments and institutions, as well as forming the basis for a number of different occupations due to the adverse effects of noise exposure.

Environmental Noise and Management provides a comprehensive overview of environmental noise pollution. The book begins by covering the fundamentals of noise and acoustics, major noise sources and prediction and evaluation techniques.Ā  Developments in noise measuring techniques, and mapping and improvement of legislation to control noise pollution are then discussed, and international regulations are presented.Ā  Technological advances and recent developments regarding strategy and action plans are also covered in depth.

Ā

Key features:

  • Summarizes the relevant international standards covering noise pollution and environmental engineering practice.
  • Presents technological advances and recent developments regarding strategy and action plans.
  • Covers developments in noise measuring techniques, prediction models, mapping and improvement of legislation to control noise pollution.

Ā

Environmental Noise and Management is a comprehensive resource for researchers and graduate students who are involved in noise pollution from the standpoint of environmental impact and control.Ā Ā

Acoustics and Noise Fundamentals

Scope

The first chapter consists of an overview of the basic concepts regarding acoustics and sound physics, with a focus on sound sources and sound propagation phenomenon. It addresses the theoretical background which is important for an understanding of the noise aspects by non‐acousticians whose work is relevant to the environment and buildings.

1.1 Acoustics and Brief History: Pioneers and Subsequent Researchers

Acoustics is defined as ā€œThe science of soundā€ and includes physics and mechanics (mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibrations). Acoustics is an applied science covering the production, transmission, perception, and effects of noise on humans. Knowledge of the principles of the physics of sound is necessary when considering environmental noise issues as measurements, evaluations, and noise control technologies are involved.
Many authors have reviewed the evolution of acoustics in history and, some pioneers given in chronological order [1–7]. The term ā€œacoustics,ā€ which means ā€œhearing,ā€ derived from the Greek word ā€œakouein,ā€ and was first applied by Sauever to the science of sound in 1701 [4].
Acoustics finds its origins in antiquity, with great achievements made in the field to the present day. A short history of some of the pioneers and their followers, with their discoveries and applications to various fields in acoustics, is outlined in Table 1.1. The first investigations in acoustics began due to an interest in musical instruments and musical theories with experiments on strings, bells, waves in the sea, tinkled glasses, etc. and later continued along with discoveries in optics. The foundation of acoustics was established in the seventeenth century by applying the optical phenomena of refraction, diffraction, and interference to acoustics. The real understanding of acoustics began with wave theory and ray concepts that influenced researchers in later centuries in architectural acoustics and noise control. Increased knowledge in physics, mathematics, and electricity in the eighteenth century produced great advances in theoretical physics and applied mechanics. Mathematicians applied new approaches to create improved theories of sound wave propagation.
The nineteenth century brought numerous research studies leading to further discoveries in the knowledge of acoustics, and these findings and theories allowed expansion of studies on complex sounds. In the early twentieth century, discoveries in electricity and magnetism constituted the foundati...
