Chapter 1

Fundamentals of electric motors

Abstract

The main objective of this chapter is to introduce the fundamental operating principle needed to understand the rotation of electric motors along with their basic structure. This chapter first explores in detail what the fundamental principle for a continuous rotation of electric motors is. Afterward, it describes how this fundamental operating principle is achieved in the three existing typical motors, which are direct current motor and alternating current motors of a synchronous motor and an induction motor. By comparing their method for achieving this fundamental principle, the difference among the typical motors is identified. In the course of this study, the background knowledge for magnetic and electric system is introduced to help the understanding of this fundamental principle of the electric motors. Lastly, a composition of the motor drive system is examined. The characteristics of a load driven by a motor and its mathematical modeling are also introduced.

A moving object that has either a linear motion or rotary motion is powered by a prime mover. A prime mover is an equipment that produces mechanical power by using thermal power, electricity, hydraulic power, steam, gas, etc. Examples of the prime mover include a gas turbine, an internal combustion engine, and an electric motor. Among these, the electric motors have recently become one of the most important prime movers and their use is increasing rapidly. Nearly 70% of all the electricity used in the current industry is used to produce electric power in the motor-driven system [1].
Electric motors can be classified into two different kinds according to the type of the power source used as shown in Fig. 1.1: direct current (DC) motor and alt...
