Durante el proceso de elaboración del Proyecto de Restauración de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Cartago, llevado a cabo por el CITCE de la Universidad del Valle (Centro de Investigación en Territorio, Construcción y Espacio), se realizaron muchos estudios relacionados, tanto con los hechos y sucesos acaecidos a lo largo de la historia del inmueble como con la construcción misma tal como ésta ha llegado hasta nosotros. Lo fundamental de estos estudios lo hemos querido recoger en este libro, convenientemente re-elaborado en un lenguaje que facilita su comprensión, para darlos a conocer a un público no especializado, respetando la secuencia que seguimos en su formulación, entendida como contexto necesario que sustenta las decisiones de intervención que hemos propuesto para la plena recuperación de esta joya de la arquitectura del Valle del Cauca.
