Juan Aguilera, el protagonista, es un ex seminarista atormentado, cargado de culpas, obsesiones y traumas. En medio de su noche de aflicciones conoce a Beatriz, una seductora mujer de la cual se enamora perdidamente. Ella también se enamora de él a pesar de que su misión es traicionarlo para obtener información de su hermano Víctor Aguilera, un reconocido guerrillero del cual se presume es el cabecilla de las FARC en la Comuna 13 de Medellín. La historia se cuenta a través de una narración paralela: de un lado el discurso en primera persona de Aguilera, cargado de diatribas y digresiones en las que con fuego y poesía expone sus sufrimientos; y del otro las confesiones del diario de Beatriz, afrentas y divagaciones en las que expone sus más íntimos sentimientos.
