Durch die Bestrebungen der Europäischen Kommission, die Rechnungslegung in den Mitgliedsstaaten der EU zu harmonisieren, rücken die derzeit für den öffentlichen Sektor anwendbaren IPSAS mehr in den Blickpunkt von Wissenschaft und Praxis.Zukünftige europäische Standards (EPSAS) sollen nach Auffassung der EU auf den IPSAS basieren, da sie derzeit das einzig international erprobte Rechnungslegungssystem für den öffentlichen Bereich sind. Innerhalb von circa zehn Jahren soll die Einführung der europäischen Rechnungslegungsstandards gelingen.Aus diesem Grund hat die KGSt, gemeinsam mit der Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin und einer Pilotkommune, der Stadt Leverkusen, ein Projekt zur exemplarischen Umrechnung eines doppischen Jahresabschlusses nach IPSAS ins Leben gerufen und durchgeführt.Die Projektergebnisse enthalten Erkenntnisse zum Umrechnungsprozess, die auch für die Einführung zukünftiger europäischer Standards wegweisend sein werden.
