âNo!â
âFraid so,â the girl said. She wiped a smear of blood away from her nostrils and grinned at him.
Gerris cursed under his breath. âI suppose you know the law on stowaways?â he said, grimacing.
âUh-huh. So either push me out the airlock or turn around and tend me.â Despite the fact that her face was gray and her knees were obviously trembling, the grin widened into a challenge.
Gerrisâs expression had nothing in it of either laughter or response. His mouth set itself in a narrow line. âObviously, you donât know just exactly what kind of a fix youâre in,â he said. âDo you know where this shipâs headed?â

Gerris frowned. âThis ship is officially designated as âRobot and/or ManualâEarth/Mars Vessel Number 3.â Itâs intended for robot operation at least ninety percent of the time. Sheâs not equipped with full manual controls. All I can do is duck away from a meteor, or make a few other minor course changes. Whatâs more, thereâs no airlock. I canât turn around, and I canât push you ...
