Act 1

Late afternoon. The rear of a slightly rundown hillside cottage overlooking Dublin in the far distance. Scattered around is various household debris from the previous tenants. UNA enters carrying a holdall and a small tent which she drops. A roll of architectural drawings tied with a ribbon and with a rose attached is tied to the door. She smiles when she sees it, takes off the rose and kisses it. As she opens the door with her keys KELLY enters and flakes to the ground.
KELLY: Please…say this…is it?
UNA: Where’d the others get to?
KELLY: They died a mile or so back.
UNA puts the rose and plans away then takes a pair of binoculars from one of the bags.
KELLY: I think I have the bends…
As UNA looks out.
KELLY: Aren’t you going to plant a flag first?
UNA: A flag?
KELLY: I thought that’s what you’re supposed to do when you reach the top of a mountain.
UNA: It’s a hill, silly.
KELLY: Are you blind? We passed through cloud back there.
UNA: Cnoc na RĆ. The King’s hill.
KELLY: King’s hill my hole. Ten minutes you said. Over half an hour that hike took.
UNA: Because someone kept stopping.
KELLY: Yes Una. To breathe. Anyway, I don’t know why you left the car down at the bottom. That road, if you could call it that, was wide enough.
UNA: I told you before, pot holes.
KELLY: I’ve seen worse.
UNA: Already given us two punctures. You ever try changing a wheel on a slope?
KELLY: Faced with that hike I’d take my chances any day of the week.
UNA: Well, we’re here now, that’s the main thing.
KELLY sizes the place up.
KELLY: So, this is it, what we’ve all been hearing about for the last few weeks?
UNA: In all its pride and glory…
KELLY: Wow…I’d sure love to afford a place like this.
UNA takes off her cardigan and starts to unpack some items.
UNA: Well, come on, the quicker we get unpacked the quicker we get to have some fun.
KELLY nods to a bruise on UNA’s arm.
KELLY: Ouch.
UNA: Huh?
KELLY: That looks nasty.
UNA: Oh that. The other day, we were tossing a dresser onto the skip. Bloody thing toppled over and caught me.
KELLY: Jesus…
UNA: Would have been flattened only Kevin grabbed it on time.
KELLY sees the rose and waves it at her.
KELLY: A regular knight in shining armour that fella, huh?
UNA: (Hesitates briefly.) Yeah.
She puts the rose aside then tosses KELLY a table cloth then puts her cardigan back on.
UNA: Here. Stick that over those crates, it’ll do for eating off later.
KELLY: Give us a chance to get my breath back, will you?
UNA: Think of it as my revenge for missing your dress fitting the other day.
KELLY takes her jacket off and puts the sheet over the crates.
KELLY: (Awkwardly.) I told you, I was at the doctors.
UNA: Listen missy, for the next five days my wedding takes precedent over anyone’s health. I don’t care if it’s a matter of life and death.
UNA peers out with the binoculars.
UNA: Still takes my breath away.
KELLY: Look, about that…
UNA: On a clear day you can just about make out Dublin.
KELLY: Una…
UNA: Thought I’d never get away from it…the whole sorry lot.
(Pauses.) Sorry, were you saying something…?
KELLY: My date for the wedding.
UNA: Oh yeah, Mr Right. Must be nearly two months now, a record. Can’t believe we’re actually gonna get to meet him at last.
KELLY: Well that’s just it you see. You won’t.
UNA: Won’t?
KELLY: (Reluctantly.) He’s not going.
UNA: Aw Kelly, and you’re only telling me this now?
KELLY: I only found out the other day.
UNA: It’s gonna mess up the whole seating arrangements. Not to mention a four-course meal going to waste.
KELLY: I’m sure you’ll have no problem filling it.
UNA: So, what did this one do? Fart in bed, belch…pick his nose?
KELLY: Nothing actually.
UNA: You’re so picky and you wonder why you haven’t got a man.
KELLY: I said he did nothing.
UNA: Well now, there’s a first.
KELLY: The other day. When I couldn’t make it for the dress fitting…
UNA: You said you’d a sore throat. I didn’t believe it for a minute.
KELLY: Well, I wasn’t exactly lying. I did go to the doctors.
She is interrupted as TRIONA enters in a bad mood.
TRIONA: Do me a favour. Next time, order a helicopter.
She flings her baggage down.
UNA: I thought you got l...
