ACT ONE
Scene One
A small Scandinavian Town
A mysterious fizzing sound like a great mirror exploding in slow motion. Then silence. Moonlight on a small town. There is a decorated platform with coloured lights. The platform is occupied by a large carnival figure of a polar bear. Its mouth is open and the place where its stomach should be is occupied by a large, hollow globe. This globe can be revolved rapidly. The great bear is a traditional lottery machine, flea-bitten and scruffy from years of use.
Quiet music. A sudden chord. A puff of smoke.
The SHOWMAN is standing on the platform. He has a big hat, a flamboyant waistcoat and a long coat and boots. Also a moustache. (This actor may double as BOJ.) He begins to sing, very quietly at first.
As he sings the MEN, WOMEN and CHILDREN enter, attracted by him. They carry lanterns in the shape of strange birds, snakes and animals. (See the book Engineers of the Imagination for instructions on how to construct such lanterns.) There is a mixture of eras in costume, a mixture of beautiful mystery and carnival vulgarity in the whole scene.

SHOWMAN produces a silver tray of coloured wooden eggs. The crowd is excited. Among the crowd are two street urchins – a boy, KAI, and his friend GERDA, a little ragged girl. The CROWD know what to do. One by one, during the following, the MEN and BOYS in the CROWD offer the SHOWMAN a coin in exchange for a wooden egg.
Then they scribble a woman’s or girl’s name on the egg and hand it back to be placed in the polar bear’s belly-globe – to be entered for the lottery.
