About this book

Seven angels have fallen through space and time for so long, they have forgotten why. Coming to rest on a desert landscape, they imagine the creation of a legendary garden that once flourished there and its destruction from greed and neglect. Inspired by Paradise Lost, Seven Angels interprets the themes of John Milton's masterpiece for a modern audience facing up to the urgent challenges of a changing climate and ever-depleting resources. This is the long-awaited first opera from Luke Bedford featuring the libretto of award-winning poet Glyn Maxwell.

(The other ANGELS start to join in, contemplating the space around them)
If a cry then a creator…
If a sigh, why then a past
Was beautiful and not deserted…
Not a desert but a garden
(A Garden starts to come to life, the day brightens)
If it sighs there was a garden…
If it cries there was a soul
To garden here, there was a soul
To make a garden of a desert
(One of the ANGELS takes the form of a man, the KING)
There was someone who was loved
And in a garden left alone…
But someone loved would not be left
Alone…Someone was in a garden…
(One of the ANGELS takes the form of a woman, the QUEEN)
…Not alone, the creature crying
Two are gone who in the past,
Who in a better time were loving
In a garden not a desert
(The KING and QUEEN in their Garden)
Two are gone and not alone
Who in a better time were dear
Who turned a garden to a desert
Who in time turn all to desert
Who in time turn all to desert
Stars rise
Though eyes be closed
Stories stir
The world from dust
Though faces fade
Voices last
Stories stir
The world from dust
