How can we eat if we stopā¦We have no food, no moneyā¦ I know we need a place of many people, I know we need a crowd to sell our medicines to, I know youāre hungry, but Iām starving! | WATERCUP: | And Love rides into battle? |
| ELAINE: | Who are you? Help! Woodland folk! Somebody help! |
| WATERCUP: | O Lady Poetical, in your most leafy beauty, a-walking in your lovely bower ā I mean leafy bower and lovely beauty ā |
| ELAINE: | A troll! A troll in the wood! In human form, a troll! I am in distress! I need a Knight! |
| WATERCUP: | May your most holy pardon be most wholly begged by your humble servant. |
| ELAINE: | This troll has mastered English. He has a familiar! (To LILY.) Were you once a cat? Can he change you back? |
| WATERCUP: | This is my sister, Lily. Sheās not my sister but sheās like a sister. Iāve known her since the day I found myself abandoned on the forest trail. |
| ELAINE: | Do I look as if I care? Why canāt she speak? |
| WATERCUP: | Her mind is gone, she has no words. |
| LILY: | Fiān dod o Gymru, y twpsyn! [4] |
| WATERCUP: | She makes those lovely sounds as if they had a meaning, itās some secret language of the dell perhaps, a tongue known only to the cuckoos. |
| ELAINE: | Or the trolls! Is she putting a spell on me? |
| WATERCUP: | (Lily!) Weāre not trolls, we are travellers. Your exquisite poem, lady, was most pleasing to the ear. I have heard of many knights and their noble exploits in love and battle, but Sir ā Dum-de-dum ā is not a name I know. Do you mean Sir Dum of Dum? |
