Este libro es una historia social, cultural y económica de los africanos y los descendientes de africanos en la península de Yucatán. Si bien el enfoque temporal corresponde al periodo colonial, que técnicamente abarca de 1541 a 1821, el estudio se extiende de la década de 1530 a la de 1830 y las fuentes consultadas se concentran entre mediados y finales del periodo colonial (aproximadamente de 1640 a 1821).
