Anhand der Analyse von neun prominenten Leitentscheidungen aus dem Sicherheitsrecht geht dieses Buch der Frage nach, ob das höchste deutsche Gericht der Freiheit oder der Sicherheit Vorzug gewährt. Seit dem 11. September 2001 nahm das Bundesverfassungsgericht vermehrt Stellung zum komplexen Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Freiheit und Sicherheit und verwarf viele Sicherheitsgesetze als verfassungswidrig. Der Autor versteht das Gericht als letzte Instanz im Staat, welche die Freiheit zu schützen hat. Als Ergebnis seiner Analyse zeigt er eine diffuse Rechtsprechungslinie auf, die das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Freiheit und Sicherheit im Zeitalter des internationalen Terrorismus nicht immer zugunsten der Freiheit beantwortet. Dennoch ist der Beitrag des Gerichts für den Freiheitsschutz unabdingbar.
