Das Buch stellt erstmals die architekturhistorischen Deutungen der mittelalterlichen Kathedrale zusammen, welche die Forschung in den letzten rund 150 Jahren erarbeitet hat. Diese Deutungen verortet und diskutiert der Autor im Kontext der allgemeinen Kunstgeschichte sowie der Kulturwissenschaft.
