Bei der Bildung des albanischen Staates 1912 stand das Deutsche Reich neben anderen europäischen Großmächten Pate. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg folgte der italienischen die deutsche Besetzung Albaniens. Das Verhältnis der Sozialistischen Volksrepublik Albanien zu den beiden deutschen Staaten entwickelte sich unterschiedlich. Nach Überwindung der kommunistischen Herrschaft beschritt Albanien den Weg in die Europäische Union. Dabei ist Deutschland ein verlässlicher Partner.
Im vorliegenden Band befassen sich Autoren aus beiden Ländern mit den politischen und wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen. Die deutsche Botschafterin in Tirana bietet einen Ausblick auf die Zukunft Albaniens.
