Este volumen es el resultado de una investigación interdisciplinar en torno a la moral sexual y a su reflejo en la cultura española entre 1843 y 1900, a partir del análisis de los textos literarios, médico-higiénicos y socio-morales, con el trasfondo de la literatura francesa contemporánea como elemento de referencia imprescindible. Durante el reinado de Isabel II nace la nueva novela española, inspirada en la profunda fractura existente entre la moral pública y la vida privada. En pleno debate europeo en torno a la legalización o abolición del comercio carnal, emerge como heroína moderna la mujer infame, en concreto la prostituta, símbolo de los males que aquejan a la sociedad contemporánea. La presencia de la mujer pública en la narrativa popular dará lugar a una asentada corriente lupanaria que legitimará la incursión de la literatura en los espacios de la vida privada y en la silenciada sexualidad femenina, abono necesario para el nacimiento de la novela erótica española del siglo XX.
