Der Band befasst sich mit deutschsprachigen Emigrantinnen und Emigranten, die auf der Flucht vor dem Nationalsozialismus ins lateinamerikanische Exil gingen. Dort wirkten sie in doppelter Hinsicht als kulturelle Mittler und Verbreiter demokratischer Ideen: Zum einen repräsentieren ihre Lebensläufe und Werke transnationale, liberale, antiautoritäre Lebensentwürfe, zum anderen haben die Emigrantinnen und Emigranten durch die Reflexion der Erfahrung von Migration und Exil neue Schreibweisen und Kunststile entwickelt, die dynamische, demokratische Weltkonzeptionen zum Ausdruck bringen. Mit dem Sammelband sollen diese Werke als Zeugnisse des Exils in den Blick genommen und neue Konzepte und Möglichkeiten globaler Vernetzung diskutiert werden.
