Der Band möchte an die Relevanz von Lehrerfiguren für die europäische Literatur seit der Antike am Beispiel der deutschen Literatur erinnern. Seine Beiträge setzen im Mittelalter ein und führen über Frühe Neuzeit und Moderne bis in die Gegenwart. Dabei zeigt sich nicht nur eine Fülle verschiedener Figurationen des Lehrers (die Enden des Spektrums sind mit dem Heiligen Geist auf der einen und dem Teufel auf der anderen Seite markiert, in der Mitte stehen Vögel als animalische Lehrerfiguren), deutlich wird auch, wie unterschiedlich die Gattungszusammenhänge sind, in denen sie auftauchen, und ebenso die Funktionen, die sie haben.
