Der Band enthält Studien zum Musiktheater von der Frühen Neuzeit bis ins späte 19. Jahrhundert. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Fragen der Poetik und Ästhetik sowie der spezifischen Bedeutungserzeugung im Musiktheater. Als Kombination sprachlicher, musikalischer und szenischer Komponenten erfordert das Musiktheater eigene Methoden der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung. Dies wird an konkreten Fallbeispielen (auch aus der historischen Operntheorie) gezeigt. Behandelt werden dabei u.a. Werke von Gluck, Mozart und Wagner, Libretti von Goethe und Hoffmann sowie theoretische Schriften von Martello und Algarotti. Die Studien zeigen, welch herausforderndes Potential das Musiktheater insbesondere für die literaturwissenschaftliche Forschung bereithält.
