Nel 1905 il princeps philologorum Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff scrive, per l’editore Teubner di Lipsia, la sua storia della letteratura greca col titolo Die griechische Literatur des Altertums. L’opera faceva parte di una collana divulgativa, ma definirla un manuale, nonostante sia stata concepita per il grande pubblico, appare decisamente riduttivo.
All’epoca Wilamowitz era all’apice della carriera scientifica: ordinario all’università di Berlino e autore di importanti contributi su Omero e sui tragici. L’opera, che in seguito ha avuto ampliamenti e ristampe, traccia una ricostruzione sintetica e penetrante della storia letteraria della Grecia antica dall’epos ionico fino all’età di Giustiniano coniugando la sistematicità dell’impostazione con scelte e valutazioni fortemente soggettive.
Sorprendente è soprattutto il poco spazio concesso al periodo classico: circa due terzi dell’opera sono riservati infatti alle epoche ellenistica e imperiale. Tuttavia la prima parte, che qui si pubblica per la prima volta in traduzione italiana, contiene un profilo autorevole di Omero, alla stregua della seconda parte che offre stimolanti capitoli sui tragici e sulla prosa attica. Questa è la ragione per cui si è preferita una circolazione autonoma delle prime due parti, in attesa della traduzione dell’opera nella sua interezza e in un unico volume.
