Il presente volume coniuga il rigore statistico al respiro storico, attraverso la lettura dei cambiamenti che hanno interessato le unità amministrative del nostro Paese a partire dall’Unità d’Italia.
Offre al lettore un duplice contributo: la conoscenza granulare del territorio amministrativo, acquisita attraverso l’analisi dei cambiamenti avvenuti nell’assetto delle partizioni amministrative, e la puntuale storia amministrativo-territoriale dei comuni e delle province tracciata nel corso dei 156 anni di osservazione (1861-2017).
È idealmente sviluppato in due parti. Nella prima si da spazio alla trattazione degli eventi storici che hanno accompagnato l’evoluzione dell’organizzazione amministrativa del territorio nazionale. I primi cinque capitoli seguono un ordine cronologico e fanno emergere gli aspetti peculiari del periodo di riferimento, fino ad analizzare in modo approfondito il processo che ha portato alla definizione delle città metropolitane e il loro ruolo.
La seconda parte, di un solo capitolo, presenta un’analisi descrittiva dei dati organizzati nel sistema informativo storico Sistat, ponendo enfasi su alcuni numeri che riguardano le principali variazioni intervenute sui comuni con riferimento agli intervalli temporali e alla distribuzione territoriale.
