Die gegenwärtigen digitalen Formen des Kommunizierens geben zweifelsohne Anlass zu Reflexionen über die Geschichte der Gattung Brief, über Brieftheorien und Briefautor_innen. Diese Voraussetzungen ließen internationale Briefforscher_innen vom 3. bis 5. März 2017 im Gebäude der Jagiellonen-Bibliothek in Kraków zu einer Tagung zusammenkommen und über die Briefentwicklung seit dem 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart nachdenken. Diese vertieften Reflexionen finden in den beiden vorliegenden Bänden ihren Niederschlag. Die Aufsätze verbindet das Bestreben, die Ästhetik des weiblichen Briefes aus drei Jahrhunderten einer kulturhistorischen Bilanz zu unterziehen, den Einfluss von gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Faktoren auf die Entfaltung der weiblichen Briefkultur zu untersuchen sowie die Aufgaben der heutigen Briefedition und den Umgang mit Nachlässen zu erwägen.
