Parallel algorithm design

ABSTRACT:
The increasing interest in parallel processing has greatly encouraged the recent developments in the design of parallel algorithms which are already supplanting the current trend of exploiting the vectorisation of existing FORTRAN programs. This ‘vectorisation’ phase of activity was deemed necessary because of the financial investment which has been involved in the construction of existing large scale programming packages and the ready availability of vector supercomputers such as the CRAY 1, CYBER 205.
However with the recent rapid developments in VLSI technology the current research trends are focussing on:
1. Parallel numerical algorithms with a large granularity of inherent parallelism present which can be exploited on computer systems with a relatively small number of powerful processors (multiprocessors, MIMD systems).
2. Highly parallel computational structures to benefit from the elaborate parallelism involved in compute bound problems, i.e. linear algebra and related fields which is achieved by directly mapping the parallel computational streams onto silicon (VLSI processor arrays, systolic algorithms).
The motivations for these two active research areas is our expectation that parallel processing will provide the potential that a parallel or...
