INVITATION TO WORSHIP

The invitation to worship calls upon the community of faith to center its worship upon God. This may be done simply by the quoting of appropriate scriptural sentences. Another form consists of a greeting that is followed by a congregational response. The call to worship, always addressed to the people, has the sole purpose of calling the congregation to its stated purpose: to worship God. The importance of clarifying for those assembled the purpose of its gathering cannot be underestimated. If a congregational response is made, it should be to affirm the purpose of the people’s gathering.

SCRIPTURAL CALLS TO WORSHIP

It is appropriate to open worship with this simple invitation:
Let us worship God.
Then may follow a variety of scriptural sentences that express the theme of the service. The sentences may either be read responsively, as occasionally indicated, or spoken entirely by the worship leader.
1
Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
Tell of God’s salvation from day to day.
Declare God’s glory among the nations,
the Creator’s marvelous works among all the peoples.
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised. (1 CHRONICLES 16:23–25, ALT.)
2
Wait for the LORD;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the LORD.
We wait for the LORD. (BASED ON PSALM 27:14)
3
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe glory to the LORD’s name;
worship the LORD in holy splendor. (PSALM 29:1–2, ALT.)
4
Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous;
praise befits the upright.
Our souls are waiting for you, O LORD;
you are our help and our shield.
In you do our hearts find joy;
we trust in your holy name.
Let your love be upon us, O God,
as we place our hope in you. (PSALM 33:1, 20–22, ALT.)
5
I will bless the LORD at all times;
God’s praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the LORD;
let the humble hear and be glad.
O magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt God’s name together. (PSALM 34:1–3, ALT.)
6
“Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth.”
The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob and Leah is our refuge. (PSALM 46:10–11, ALT.)
7
O Lord, open our lips;
and our mouths shall sing forth your praise.
Praise the LORD.
The LORDS name be praised. (BASED ON PSALM 51:15)
8
Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of God’s name;
give to God glorious praise. (PSALM 66:1–2, ALT.)
9
I will sing of your steadfast love, O God, forever.
With my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness
to all generations.
I declare that your steadfast love is established forever;
your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,
your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones. (PSALM 89:1–2, 5)
10
It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night,
to the music of the lute and the harp,
to the melody of the lyre.
For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work;
at the works of your hands I sing for joy.
How great are your works, O LORD!
Your thoughts are very deep! (PSALM 92:1–5)
11
O come, let us sing to the LORD;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into God’s presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to God with songs of praise!
(PSALM 95:1–2, ALT.)
12
O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. (PSALM 96:9, KJV)
Honor and majesty are rightfully God’s;...
