Así, el autor examina en detalle a una serie de teóricos, como Karl Marx, Max Weber y Norbert Elias, y se enfrenta, con admiración crítica, a historiadores de la talla de Fernand Braudel, Moses I. Finley o Perry Anderson. Plantea, igualmente, una metodología comparativa de análisis intercultural que permite analizar en profundidad consecuencias históricas divergentes y que elimina las desfasadas y simplistas diferencias entre el "atrasado Oriente" y el "Occidente industrioso". El lector encontrará en esta obra una sugerente reflexión que le ayudará a comprender mejor tanto su propia historia como la de los pueblos no occidentales.
