In questa dottrina, letteralmente inaudita, Descartes ha dato voce ad un pensiero irriducibile alla tradizione precedente, tracciando le linee guida di un'altra, e ben più radicale, idea di Dio. È significativo, tuttavia, che il filosofo francese si sia limitato ad elaborare ed esporre i presupposti della sua teoria soltanto nel proprio epistolario, e non nelle opere destinate ad un più ampio pubblico. L'analisi delle ragioni di questa scelta intende restituire al lettore la dialettica che ha caratterizzato la riflessione di Descartes, collocandola nell'immaginario barocco cui a pieno titolo apparteneva.
