En España, se roba la mitad que hace 20 años y menos que en Alemania, Francia, Reino Unido o Italia -la campeona de Europa-, y se roba sobre todo los sábados (en un 15,9%), casi 50.000 vehículos sustraídos en total, de los que se recuperan un 39%. Por encima de cualquier mes, julio se corona como el período con más denuncias con un 9,6%. Algunos de los motivos por los que la cifra de coches robados ha bajado son que los vehículos son más seguros, mayor eficiencia policial y que el 'mercado negro' se ha ralentizado. El coche más robado es el Seat León, seguido del Volkswagen Golf, el BMW Serie 3 y el Ibiza, puesto que este tipo de coches son más apetecibles en los países del Este (que junto al norte de África constituyen los principales destinos de estos vehículos tras el robo), y que también las piezas tienen más salida en los desguaces de segunda mano. Madrid es la comunidad donde más se roba (12%), seguida por Toledo (por cercanía y número de desguaces) y Alicante.
