In some situations, an attempt to exactly integral transform a certain diffusion or convection-diffusion problem, through utilization of the most appropriate auxiliary problem, might introduce undesirable difficulties in the accurate and reliable solution of the eigenvalue problem itself, sometimes an even more cumbersome task than simply numerically solving the original problem.
The generalized integral transform technique, however, has been progressively extended to alleviate such difficulties in several classes of problems, through consideration of auxiliary problems that are more readily solvable and that still carry some information about the original problem.
