OFF CENTRE

The easiest way to create a dynamic composition, no matter which aspect ratio you’re working in (square, rectangle, etc.), is to keep the subject out of the centre of the frame. This approach works to make the viewer’s eye dance around the image. Focusing on a subject centred in the frame will instantly pull and hold the viewer’s attention to a single point.
Image
1 BISECT THE HORIZON
A horizon defines a midline; by bisecting the frame in the bottom third or top third, you can make a livelier image. Bisecting the horizon line with, say, a church spire, gives the image openness and allows the viewer to focus on the subject. It can also provide space for the placement of text.
2 CREATE MOVEMENT
Keeping things out of the centre creates movement. By placing a subject or part of a subject in the foreground or middle ground off centre, you’re asking the viewer to move their eye around the page, and so take the time to digest the picture.
3 SUBJECT AND SURROUNDINGS
When the subject is off centre, other parts of the composition then become more relevant. For example, if you’re shooting outdoors, placing a big arching tree off to the side pulls the viewer’s attention to other areas of the picture plane – a gorgeous sky in the background, perhaps, or a group of people hanging out at the base of the tree.
4 RULES ARE FOR BREAKING: CENTRE IT!
Sometimes you’ve got to upend what you know and put the subject in the centre of the frame. Emphasising a particular quality of a subject (perhaps its circular shape) by placing it dead middle of the picture plane can be an effective way to amplify a message. There’s an awkwardness to this style of image that can be appealing and fun.
When the subject is off centre, other parts of the composition become more relevant.

EMBRACE THE NEGATIVE SPACE

Negative space is simply the area around and between the main subjects in an image. People have been using the power of negative space since they began painting in caves. The technique is critical in all art forms: sculpture, painting, drawing and photography. Using negative space is all about balance and creating a relationship between context and subject. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when composing an image with negative space.

1 MOOD AND EMOTION
Negative space provides the mood, emotion and context of an image. The setting and the space that the subject inhabits are huge factor...
