Weāre lucky to be surrounded by drawing inspiration every day! Everything from the mailbox on the corner to your morning cup of coffee can be a subject for a drawing.
When practicing drawing everyday objects, itās helpful to collect drawings of similar objects or create a drawing collage of a variety of different subjects. Both are great methods for practicing and filling your sketchbook. The potted plants below are drawings I collected in my sketchbook while in Italy one summer.
Need ideas for places to find objects for sketching? Try some of my favorite spots listed below. If youāre nervous to sketch in public, ask if you can take a quick photo so you can work at home.
⢠FARMERSā MARKET OR FARM STANDS: fruits, vegetables, and flowers galore!
⢠CAR SHOWS: great for a variety of older car subjects
⢠GARDEN SUPPLY STORES: everything from succulents to lawn gnomes and plastic flamingos
⢠COFFEE SHOPS: light fixtures, coffee cups, and baked goods
⢠ANTIQUE STORES: vintage teapots and cups
⢠PARKS: bikes and playground equipment
Another great way to gather sketches is to go on a sketch crawl. Pick a day and place, and sketch your way through it. You can choose a theme or just create a new sketch at regular intervals. Sketch for one to five minutes, walk for another few minutes, and pick something in a new spot to sketch for another one to five minutes. The spontaneity can give you an eclectic collection of drawings. Make each sketch a new page, or group them all on the same page for a drawing collage.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
When drawing fruits or vegetables, pay close attention to the irregularities. Very few fruits and vegetables are perfectly round or symmetrical. Even the most perfectly round-looking orange has a divot at the top where the stem was. Make sure to really study your object and not let your mind fill in the gaps.
Food, drinks, fruits, and veggies also change depending upon the angle from which you look. Take some time to break down an object from a variety of anglesāthe side, bottom, looking down on itā¦all angles!
Lemons are great, because theyāre comprised of circles and ovals. First lightly sketch the shape of the lemon and its two ends. Overlap the shapes to get the angles right.
Connect the shapes with curved lines and erase any lines you no longer need. Identify any highlights on the lemonāyou can even outline the highlights as a guide of where NOT to apply any shading.
Slowly build up the shadows, paying attention to the direction...
