Ancora agli albori della nascita del postmoderno (prima edizione 1974), Renato Barilli si interroga sui rapporti di natura filosofica sottesi a quel clima. Le "filosofie della presenza" a suo avviso sono quelle espresse da McLuhan e Marcuse che, con l'aiuto dell'elettronica, pongono un coinvolgimento diretto ("sintetico") tra l'uomo e il mondo. Le "filosofie dell'assenza" sono invece quelle istituite dal positivismo logico, di Carnap e seguaci, fondato su criteri analitici, ma più ancora dai "nuovi filosofi" francesi (Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze) che in sostanza negano la possibilità di un incontro diretto tra il soggetto e l'oggetto, o almeno lo fanno "differire" il più possibile. Da queste concezioni opposte discendono due modi diversi per intendere i nostri tempi. In un'epoca come la nostra, nella quale ancora ci interroghiamo sui reali effetti derivanti dalla tecnologia, il saggio di Barilli si offre come strumento efficace a tratti di penetrante attualità.
