Negli ultimi anni la disabilità è entrata nella retorica mediatica grazie a una serie di libri che ha avuto il merito di raccontare le asperità di quest'esperienza (sdoganando pensieri indicibili in cui persino un genitore è avvolto), e grazie a una maggiore presenza di disabili negli spazi televisivi e nella rete, dove si denunciano discriminazioni sociali e si descrive la dimensione quotidiana di questa condizione. Tuttavia tale esposizione mediatico-letteraria serve solo a estetizzare la disabilità per spingere all'indignazione o per rappresentare una sorta di riscatto consolatorio – "sì, lui è così, ma ce l'ha fatta". Questo atteggiamento edificante rischia di non rivelare il reale valore della disabilità, che riguarda la vulnerabilità della nostra specie esposta al rischio biologico dei giorni (tra l'altro, un potente rimosso del western way of life). Per evitare l'accettazione fantasma dovremmo ripensare un concetto più fluido di norma solo dopo aver scelto di restare fedeli a questa immanente rottura nell'ordine dell'esistenza.
