Nel 1933, due mesi dopo la nomina di Hitler a Cancelliere, Cassirer abbandona l'Università di Amburgo e comincia un periodo di esilio in alcune università straniere. Prima a Oxford, poi a Göteborg, in Svezia, dove soggiorna dal 1935 al 1941. In questo "periodo svedese" Cassirer pubblica il saggio Determinismo e indeterminismo nella fisica moderna (1937), confermando una continuità di interesse con gli orientamenti di tipo gnoseologico ed epistemologico della sua ricerca giovanile e, al tempo stesso, approfondendo i temi della filosofia della cultura, che troveranno poi sistemazione nel saggio Sulla logica delle scienze della cultura (1942) e nel noto Saggio sull'uomo (1944, edito in Italia da Mimesis nel 2011). La "filosofia delle forme simboliche" nasce proprio da queste indagini di filosofia della scienza.
