Las personas físicas que perciben ingresos tienen la obligación de efectuar pagos provisionales, definitivos o estatales del Impuesto sobre la Renta (ISR), a cuenta del ISR del ejercicio, ya sea directamente, a través de las retenciones que realizan las personas que les efectúan los pagos o, en el caso de operaciones consignadas en escrituras públicas, mediante la retención que realizan los fedatarios públicos.
