Nos son caros y sustanciales no porque nos recuerden una existencia menesterosa en un mundo difícilmente legible o sean la imagen de la fugacidad de los días y las noches, sino que son la propia vida. Hubo personas que sintieron o pensaron algo que juzgaron digno y nos lo dejaron escrito dentro de unas como botellas de vidrio selladas y arrojadas al mar de los siglos. Al menos eso creemos quienes nos dedicamos a las artes del libro o a su estudio, los que nos definimos como gente de libros. Sin embargo, los libros, para algunos, son más que esa evocación. Ha habido personas que transitaron entre libros, se ensamblaron a ellos y tuvieron una reserva inagotable de aliento para cualquier asunto libresco. Uno de los más notorios fue Ricardo de Bury (1238-1345) quien nos legó el primer tratado sobre la formación y conservación de una biblioteca y el cuidado de los libros: Filobiblon.
