El libro que ahora presento al público es, ante todo, un homenaje que dedico al profesor Milton Santos, de quien fui alumno en el curso de posgrado y colega del Departamento de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de São Paulo. Tuve la honra de tenerlo como miembro de mi banca de doctorado en 1991, y el privilegio de su interlocución a lo largo de más de dos décadas (vale mencionar que la mayoría de los libros reseñados en el presente texto traen su dedicatoria, siempre con el comentario: "aguardo sus críticas"). En fin, ahora respondo a esa demanda con añoranza y admiración.En el texto del memorial que redacté para el concurso de profesor titular, fechado en 2005, comenté el impacto de su llegada a la Universidad de São Paulo y la dificultad de expresar la importancia de su presencia en la vida del departamento1. Intenté en el breve análisis aquí realizado, guiarme por un único concepto, ser fiel a sus enunciados y en seguir su propio estilo de redacción (marcado por las indicaciones bibliográficas directas y por la cita puntual de sus autores).
