Il recto della medaglia raffigurante l'emblema di Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) mostra il suo busto di profilo: il ritratto è derivato dall'esempio di Pisanello (maestro dell'autore della medaglia, Matteo de' Pasti). Il rovescio presenta un'allegoria misteriosa, probabilmente concepita dallo stesso Alberti. Vi è un Occhio Alato al centro, che deriva dall'iconografia egizia dell'occhio di Horus, citato anche in un passo del De re aedificatoria. Sette fiammelle appaiono sotto l'occhio, tante quante le lettere dell'iscrizione «Quid Tum» («allora dunque» un motto della retorica ciceroniana), forse un riferimento numerologico al trascorrere del tempo (i sette giorni della Creazione, i sette pianeti, ecc.). Ma ci sono molte altre sorprese, leggere per credere.
