Questo evento traumatico portò a grandi trasformazioni sia nella lingua (introduzione dell'alfabeto arabo) che nella letteratura (introduzione di generi e metri poetici arabi). La letteratura precedente in pahlavi, o medio-persiano, continuerà essenzialmente come espressione degli ambienti zoroastriani fino al X secolo e oltre.
