Nel 553 a. C. i Persiani, rimasti a lungo nell'Iran occidentale sotto il dominio dei Medi, passarono all'aperta rivolta. I sovrani di Ecbatana non riuscirono a soffocare il movimento e furono travolti. In breve tutto l'altipiano cadde sotto il controllo dei Persiani, il cui leader, Ciro, pose la propria capitale a Pasargade. La rivolta portò sull'altipiano ad un processo d'unificazione nazionale, che rese possibile il costituirsi del regno persiano, forse la prima grande unità imperiale del mondo. Restano a Pasargade poche rovine, tra le quali le mura della cittadella, varie fondamenta e numerose colonne. Un particolare interesse ha la tomba di Ciro, un grande blocco a forma di casa attetto spiovente, originariamente chiusa da colonne. La tomba doveva essere ancora intatta quando fu visitata da Alessandro Magno. Nel 521 divenne re di Persia Dario, il quale promosse grandiosi lavori a Persepoli (oggi Taht-i Gamsad), uno dei piÚ grandi centri archeologici asiatici. La città raggiunse in pochi decenni il primato culturale e religioso nell'Iran, anche perchÊ ogni anno, in primavera, i re persiani vi presiedevano i festeggiamenti per il nuovo anno.
