Poi ci si misero scrittori di romanzi d’appendice, quali un Alessandro Dumas, che intinsero le loro penne nel veleno più distillato e pernicioso, addolcito dalla solita zuccherosa retorica risorgimentale, e il gioco fu fatto. Gravina e i suoi diventarono nella vulgata popolare delle vere e proprie belve sanguinarie dai comportamenti orripilanti. Certo l’ex Regno delle Due Sicilie non era sicuramente il paradiso in terra, ma era pur sempre la terra amata dei loro avi. Certo Gravina a volte fu più brigante che legittimista, ma a fronte aveva truppe, che spesso e volentieri gli condussero contro una guerra crudele e feroce senza onore. E quei fratelli in divisa, venuti dal nord, non poche volte furono anch’essi più assassini che soldati. E poi una storia nella storia, quella amara di Lione, il cane di Gravina scannato dalle Guardie Nazionali, che ancora ci tocca il cuore e che è stato motivo non secondario nella genesi di questo libro.
