La pirateria è l'azione illegale dei pirati, che compiono violenza in ambito nautico. Nella Storia tipicamente essi abbordano, predano o affondano navi in alto mare, nei porti, sui fiumi, negli estuari e nelle insenature, dopo aver abbandonato la precedente vita sui mercantili per scelta o per costrizione. "Pirata" deriva dal latino pirata, piratæ, che ha un suo corrispettivo nel greco πειρατ?ς (peiratès), da πειρ?ω (peiráo) che significa “tentare" e "attaccare".
I luoghi considerati ad alto rischio perché interessati dalla presenza di pirati sono cambiati. Tra questi spiccano il Mare Caraibico, la zona dello stretto di Gibilterra, il Madagascar, il Mar Rosso, il Golfo Persico, il litorale del Malabar nonché tutta l'area tra Filippine, Malaysia e Indonesia ove spadroneggiavano i pirati filippini.
