Tao Tê Ching ( Libro della Via e della Virtù ) è un testo cinese attribuito al saggio Lao Tse (o Lao Tzu o Lao Ts?), del quale peraltro non esiste attestazione storica certa. È scritto in prosa talvolta rimata e la sua composizione risale a un periodo compreso tra il IV e il III secolo avanti Cristo. Il libro si presta a innumerevoli interpretazioni. C'è il sospetto che le tavolette dalle quali in origine era composto - mal rilegate - si slegassero frequentemente, così che interi blocchi di caratteri si mescolarono nel tramandarlo: da qui i molti piani di lettura. In questa edizione il testo è stato prudentemente normalizzato e sono state espunte le lunghe note finali, più adatte a un trattato filologico che a un libro di consultazione.
