Cui fan le digradanti Alpi corona,
Vissi oscuri i miei dì,...» Con questi versi della poesia intitolata A Fedele Lampertico, scritta nel 1868, Giacomo Zanella descrive il suo amato paese, Chiampo, situato nella verde campagna vicentina. Il poeta nacque a Chiampo il 9 settembre 1820, da famiglia di modeste condizioni. Il padre, Adriano, possedeva un negozio di generi vari; la madre, Laura Beretta, era imparentata con alcune notabili famiglie del luogo.
Nel villaggio natio il poeta trascorse i primi otto anni della sua vita.
