Il Mar Rosso (in arabo: ????? ??????, al-Ba?r al-A?mar; ebraico: ?? ???, Yam Suf; tigrino: ??? ???, Qey? ba?ri) è un mare del Vicino Oriente compreso tra l'Africa e la penisola araba, comunicante con il mar Mediterraneo attraverso il canale di Suez, e con l'Oceano Indiano tramite lo stretto di Bab el-Mandeb. La spiegazione più diffusa è legata alla presenza nelle sue acque di Trichodesmium erythraeum, un'alga che in alcune condizioni climatiche si riproduce creando estese macchie rosso-brune sulla superficie dell’acqua. Viene dipinto così nel planisfero di Cantino mappamondo portoghese del XVI secolo. Il nome appare già nel greco Erythra Thalassa (Ερυθρ? Θ?λασσα), in latino Mare Rubrum (in alternativa Sinus Arabicus, letteralmente "Golfo Arabo"). In italiano viene denominato così già da Dante. Nel dell'Inferno (XXIV, 90) scrive: «né tante pestilenzie né sì ree/mostrò già mai con tutta l’Etïopia/né con ciò che di sopra al Mar Rosso».Lo cita anche nel Paradiso (VI, 79): «Con costui corse infino al lito rubro». Il mar Rosso è un mare dipendente dall'oceano Indiano, chiuso al nord dalla punta meridionale della penisola del Sinai, ad ovest dalla costa orientale dell'Africa e ad est dall'Arabia Saudita. A sud lo stretto di Bab-el-Mandeb lo mette in comunicazione con il golfo di Aden. Si estende tra 30° e 12° 40' di lat. nord, su una lunghezza di ca. 2230 km e con una larghezza massima di 300 km ed una minima di 80 km ad anche meno. Ha una superficie di ca. 447.000 kmq e una profondità media di 480 m.
