La preistoria  è il periodo della storia umana che convenzionalmente precede la scrittura, anteriore quindi alla storia documentata e abbracciante l'intervallo temporale, secondo una visione sufficientemente condivisa, che va da circa 2, 5-2, 6 milioni di anni fa sino (almeno in Eurasia) al 4000 a.C. In alcune discipline e contesti è comprensiva della protostoria, ovvero di quasi tutta l'era quaternaria.
Mentre l'inizio del periodo appare relativamente poco problematico, soggetto alla repertazione, e concerne la paleoantropologia e l'antropologia molecolare, la sua conclusione non è univoca e soggiace a variazioni anche notevoli, prevalentemente di ambito geografico. Esistono molte culture non definibili preistoriche, specie nel continente americano e nell'Africa subsahariana, che non hanno o hanno tardivamente introdotto l'uso della scrittura; anche in Europa ed Asia vi sono state rilevanti differenze temporali.
Nel 1833 Paul Tournal (1805-1872), fondatore della Commission Archéologique e del museo di Narbonne, aveva utilizzato il temine anté-historique; la prima occorrenza del termine prehistoric è del 1851, nel titolo di un libro di Daniel Wilson (1816-1892); in seguito il termine si è diffuso anche in altre lingue.
