Il termine "psicologia" deriva dal greco psyché (ψυχ?) = spirito, anima e da logos (λ?γο&sigmaf;) = discorso, studio. Letteralmente la psicologia è quindi lo studio dello spirito o dell'anima. Il significato del termine, introdotto durante il XVI secolo, rimase immutato fino al XVII secolo, quando assunse il significato di "scienza della mente". Negli ultimi cento anni, il significato del termine è cambiato ulteriormente adeguandosi alle nuove prospettive e alla moderna metodologia. È interessante segnalare che iconograficamente psyché (ψυχ?) può essere interpretato come farfalla: molte decorazioni di antichi vasi greci raffigurano con l'immagine di una farfalla lo spirito (anima) che esala nell'istante della morte. La psicologia è la scienza che studia le reazioni d'un organismo, umano o animale, agli stimoli del mondo esterno. Tale definizione, per quanto in sé piuttosto generica, esprime meglio i risultati delle conoscenze più recenti in fatto di psicologia e ha il vantaggio di non richiamare la confusione delle vecchie definizioni, per cui la psicologia era la scienza dell'anima o della mente. Dalla psicologia va escluso il concetto di anima, che rientra più precisamente nella teologia; inoltre la parola mente non ha più una sua indicazione, perché, come è ormai sperimentalmente provocato, i processi psichici si svolgono attraverso reazioni elettrico-chimicho-fisiche, talora interessanti l'intero organismo. La natura di tali processi non autorizza perciò più alla distinzione, di derivazione metafisica, tra la mente, centro dei fenomeni psichici, e la materia, sede dei f...
