Tra i pochi autori italiani inseriti nei "Gialli Mondadori", Franco Enna è considerato uno dei maestri della letteratura di genere italiana. Gino Artieri, piccolo e anonimo contrabbandiere italiano è il protagonista de La grande paura. È lui a incontrare uno degli ospiti di un Hotel svizzero, non lontano dal confine. Un personaggio in apparenza facoltoso che gli propone un affare strano quanto vantaggioso: consegnare a un suo amico, nella lontana Lampedusa, una rara copia della Francesca da Rimini, una tragedia di Gabriele D'Annunzio. L'idea di una vacanza fuori programma e il compenso, molto elevato, spingono Artieri ad accettare la proposta. Artieri non immagina che dietro la consegna di questo libro si nasconde una serie di insidie che metteranno a repentaglio la sua stessa vita.
