La parola comunismo deriva dal latino communis e fu coniata nelle società segrete rivoluzionarie di Parigi fra il 1834 e il 1839. Con essa si intende sia un sistema sociale basato sulla proprietà collettiva sia la dottrina politica che pone i principi programmatici di tale sistema.
Il comunismo nell'antichità e nel Medioevo
Il comunismo formò una parte integrale dell'antico mito dell'età dell'oro, la idealizzazione, da parte dell'uomo civile, del primitivo stadio naturale della storia umana. Nel sec. V a. C. i Greci considerarono come ideali le leggi di Licurgo, che si riteneva avesse ripristinato l'uguaglianza economica ed eliminato le due classi che a quei tempi s'erano formate, i ricchi e i poveri. Platone, con La Repubblica, è il primo scrittore dell'antichità che abbia espressamente trattato d'una società comunista. I cittadini, che svolgono il lavoro che loro più aggrada, sono divisi in tre classi: i filosofi che governano lo stato, i guerrieri che lo difendono e i produttori (contadini, artigiani, commercianti) che soddisfano i bisogni economici. Platone non considera quest'ultima classe né quella degli schiavi, ma si sofferma sulle prime due e per esse vuole il comunismo. La proprietà privata, casa, terra, denaro, deve essere abolita e i cittadini devono vivere in caserme prendendo i pasti in comune; inoltre, "le donne devono essere tutte mogli in comune.... nessuna donna deve vivere con alcun uomo privatamente e anche il loro figli devono essere in comune e il genitore non deve conoscere la sua creatura, ne il figlio suo padre" ( La Repubblica, V, 457).
