In Fisica l'oscillatore armonico è di fondamentale importanza, in quanto simula il comportamento di molti sistemi meccanici sottoposti a campi di forze che sono ben approssimati da forze elastiche e quindi, derivanti da un potenziale di oscillatore armonico.
Il libro è per studenti del corso di Fisica Generale 1 (fisici, matematici) o di Fisica 1 (ingegneria), ma anche di Meccanica Razionale (e Meccanica Analitica), giacché è richiesta la conoscenza della teoria delle equazioni differenziali.
Il Capitolo 1 è dedicato ai "processi oscillatori ideali" ovvero in assenza di attrito. Viene quindi trattato il fenomeno della risonanza, applicando poi l'analisi di Fourier per forze periodiche ma non sinusoidali.
Nel Capitolo 2 si passa a uno studio più realistico, nel senso che si tiene conto dell'inevitabile presenza dell'attrito che conduce alle "oscillazioni smorzate". Queste ultime vengono poi simulate nell'ambiente di calcolo Mathematica."
