Nel 1970 i neurofisiologi cileni Humberto Maturana e Francisco Varela dell'università di Santiago del Cile, nel tentativo di formulare una definizione operativa di "sistema vivente" nel paradigma meccanicistico (ossia senza invocare enti metafisici del tipo forza vitale ) si imbattereno in una strana proprietà dei predetti sistemi. In parole povere, ciò che effettivamente distingue un sistema vivente da un sistema non vivente, non è la capacità di riproduzione, bensì la proprietà di "produrre parte di sè". Tale argomentazione potrebbe suonare banale, ma in realtà apre nuovi fantastici orizzonti nel paradigma della teoria dei sistemi. I due neuroscienziati coniarono un nuovo termine per denominare la caratteristica fondamentale degli organismi viventi: autopoiesi che tradotto dal greco significa, appunto, produzione di sé. Marcello Colozzo, laureato in Fisica si occupa sin dal 2008 di didattica online di Matematica e Fisica attraverso il sito web Extra Byte dove vengono eseguite "simulazioni" nell'ambiente di calcolo Mathematica.
