Appartenente ai linguaggi indo-europei, la lingua latina fu parlata in origine dalle tribù dei Latini che abitavano il Latium, una regione pianeggiante lungo la costa tirrenica a sud del Tevere. Con l'espansione politica e militare di Roma, fondata secondo la tradizione nel 753 a. C., il latino divenne la lingua più importante dell'area mediterranea ed ebbe in seguito una parte fondamentale nella storia della civiltà . I Latini subirono all'inizio della loro storia l'influenza linguistica dei Sabini, un altro popolo indo-europeo, e degli Etruschi, gli unici in Italia che parlavano una lingua non indo-europea. Tale influenza fu profonda anche perché Sabini ed Etruschi esercitarono per un certo tempo un predominio militare nel Latium. Più tardi vi fu l'influsso dei Greci del Mezzogiorno d'Italia e, in misura minore, quello dei Celti o Galli abitanti la valle padana. Si hanno scarse testimonianze sullo sviluppo del latino nella sua fase arcaica durata fino al III sec. a. C.
